First of all, I was very happy to have the opportunity to participate in the pen pal program held by the 4-H Club. My school which I studied before had held the same activities, but I didn't join then, and I was envious that they could have their own pen pal, so I looked forward to participating in similar activities for a long time, and I finally had the chance to fulfill my dream!

Since this was the first time I have participated in such a program, and also communicated with the person from a foreign country, I chatted with my pen pal nervously and excitedly. Also, in the beginning I wondered whether my pen pal was a shy girl or an outgoing one.

After the first conversation, I found that my pen pal, Sydney, was enthusiasm and active person. She often shared her life with me, and the different cultural customs were even more eye-opening. For example, Sydney's family had their own farm, and she had her own horses. She shared how to take care of her horses and prepare for hunter (jumping a horse) races with me. Furthermore, Sydney had won at least 100 ribbons in this kind of competition, which was impressive!

A difference between me and Sydney was that I studied in school, but she was homeschooled. She was free, so she could do whatever she wanted, but only if she completed her weekly assignments. She says that homeschooling gives her half of the day to take care of the horses, and half a day to complete schoolwork.

I found out that because my pen pal was authentically American, so I improved my reading and writing skills after months of conversation. The pen pal program held by 4-H Club really benefited me a lot, not only the improvement of my English ability, but also learning about the culture of different countries. The natural landscapes and things that I could not see in Taiwan, through Sydney's photo sharing, I can see the beautiful scenery of the American countryside.

In addition, through this pen pal plan, I also made a kind and lovely friend, I agreed with Sydney to continue to write letters in the future. If she has the opportunity to visit Taiwan in the future, I will show her around Taiwan, share the famous scenery spots in Taiwan and treat her with delicious Taiwanese local food!
