Before joining this activity, I had never had any experience in exchanging pen pals or writing letters with friends. When I discovered the event of exchanging foreign pen pals, I thought that I would not be suitable for this kind of activity that requires a long-term exchange of letters. Fortunately, when I noticed that the exchange object was an American, I am deeply interested in American culture and eager to share Taiwanese culture, so I immediately decided to sign up !

During the exchange of letters with foreign pen pals, we talked about a lot of topics about the United States, such as, American customs, school activities, subjects of interest, the countries we want to travel to in the future, and the local epidemic situation in the United States. What impressed me the most is that the educational system in the United States is completely different from that in Taiwan. High school students in Taiwan basically study the content of exams, and usually do not have any extracurricular activities. However, high school students in the United States, there are a lot of vocational training courses at the university, as well as participate in some extracurricular activities, such as, working in local companies, accumulating diverse learning experiences and exploring their own interests.

Just when I recognized American culture, I also shared with him many things about Taiwan, such as introducing various customs and activities of the New Year, snacks in Taiwan night markets, the human touch in Taiwan, and the life of Taiwan students. In this process, not only did I have a better understanding of my hometown Taiwan, but also as a foreigner who had never been to Taiwan. Through my sharing, maybe he could gain a preliminary understanding of Taiwan and see what Taiwan really looks like.

I am very grateful for this pen pal exchange activity, which gave me the opportunity to meet more friends. I also learned how to write English letters, the translation of sentences, the format of writing letters, and many brand-new letters from the replies. Thanks to my pen pal, who brought me a deeper understanding of the United States and shared his life experience with me that made me feel very fulfilled and happy during the event.
